North Aegean Sea
LOCATION AND HISTORY
The north-eastern Mediterranean Sea, between the eastern coast of Greece and Turkey, is named after the mythical character Aegeus, king of Athens and father of Theseus. In this sea there are countless islands and island groups such as the Dodecanese, Sporades and Cyclades. Most of them were colonised by the Greeks in 1000 BC and wine culture has an ancient tradition on all of them. Even in antiquity, the best Greek wines were produced here and brought to Rome. The poet Homer died in Chios in the 8th century BC and the island's wine was considered the best wine in Greece. In the Middle Ages, sweet wines proliferated and were sent all over Europe. The most important are Crete, Lesvos, Limnos, Mykonos, Paros, Rhodes, Samos, Santorini and Thasos. Most are classified POP and the vineyards cover some 9,000 ha.
NORTH AEGEAN ISLANDS ΝΗΣΙΑ ΒΟΡΕΙΟΥ ΑΙΓΑΙΟΥ
The North Aegean is not an actual archipelago, but a label for a dozen islands and islets in the northeastern part of the Aegean Sea, closer to the west coast of Turkey than to mainland Greece. The five main islands are Samos, Lesvos, Limnos, Ikaria and Chios.
SPORADES ΣΠΟΡΑΔΑΣ ΝΗΣΙΑ ΑΙΓΑΙΟΥ
The Sporades Islands, are a group of four islands in the northwest sector of the Aegean Sea. The most famous island of the archipelago is Skiathos: sophisticated and cosmopolitan, much sought after by Greek tourists. Another island is the picturesque Skopelos, known for the musical film Mamma Mia!
