North Aegean Islands
There is one denomination classified as POP (Formerly OPAP and OPE): OPAP LIMNOS
OPAP LIMNOS ΛΉΜΝΟΣ
This Greek volcanic island lies in the northern Aegean Sea, between the Athos peninsula to the northwest and the mainland of Asia Minor to the east. According to Greek mythology, the lame Hephaistos (Roman Vulcan), the Greek god of fire and forging, lived here. In his Iliad, the poet Homer mentions the island as a source of wine for the Greek army during the siege of Troy and tells how Hephaistos forged new weapons for the hero Achilles.
At the end of the 19th century phylloxera destroyed the vineyards and a reconstruction was carried out mainly with Moschato Aspro (White Muscat) and Muscat of Alexandria.
TYPES OF GRAPES
The vineyards cover about 1,200 ha with two appellations of origin. The Limnos white wine is made from Moschato Aspro and Muscat of Alexandria and is vinified dry, semi-dry and sweet. The sweet dessert wine Limnos Muscat is produced from 100% pure Muscat of Alexandria. It is produced as natural sweet wine, liqueur wine (both fortified) and naturally sweet wine. If the grapes come from old vineyards with low yields, the Grand Cru designation can be used on the label.
A red wine is also produced from the indigenous Limnio grape variety. The best known producers are Limnos Organic Wines and Hatzigeoriou.
