There are four designations classified as POPs (formerly OPAP and OPE) which are:
OPAP ARCHANES ΑΡΧΆΝΕΣ of red wine
POP area of the district of Iraklio, to the north is the archaeological site of Knossos where one of the oldest Minoan wine presses has been found. It is a wine of dense colour and strong alcohol, worthy of ageing, and produced with Kotsifali and Mandalaria grapes, it is vinified dry.
OPAP DAFNES ΔΑΦΝΈΣ of red wine
POP area of Iraklio district, near the capital Heraklion. The vineyards extend along the southern foot of the Psiloritis massif. The red wine is made from the indigenous variety Liatiko in dry and sweet form.
PEZA ΠΕΖΖΆ of red and white wines
POP area of the district of Iraklio, near the capital Heraklion. The vineyards must be located at an altitude of more than 300 m. A red wine of intense colour is produced from the indigenous grape varieties Kotsifali 75% and Mandalaria, the white wine is made from the grape variety Vilana, both are dry vinified. The best known producers are the wineries Creta Olympias, Lyrarakis and Tsantali.
OPAP SITIA ΣΗΗΤΕΊΑ of red and white wines
POP area of the district of Lasithi, in the east of the Greek island of Crete. It is the centre of the region and is characterised by the extensive cultivation of olive trees. The red wine is made from the indigenous varieties Liatiko up to 80% and Mandilaria up to 20% in both dry and sweet varieties. Sweet wine is produced from the indigenous variety Vilana 70% and Tharpsathiri 30% dry.
Archaeological remains indicate a settlement since 1050 BC.
