Italy - Sardinia
Sardinia (Sardegna) is an Italian island located in the west of the peninsula across the Tyrrhenian Sea from Lazio and just south of the French island of Corsica. Its capital and largest city is Cagliari in the south. Tourists know Sardinia best for the fashionable beaches of the Costa Smeralda in the far northeast. In the world of wine, Sardinia is known for red wines made from Cannonau and white wines made from Vermentino. It has 1 DOCG Vermentino di Gallura, 17 DOC and 15 IGP.
DOC: Alghero, Arborea, Cagliari, Campidano di Terralba / Terralba, Cannonau di Sardegna, Carignano del Sulcis, Girò di Cagliari, Malvasia di Bosa, Mandrolisai, Monica di Sardegna, Moscato di Sardegna, Moscato di Sorso-Sennori, Nasco di Cagliari, Nuragus di Cagliari, Sardegna Semidano, Vermentino di Sardegna, Vernaccia di Oristano.
Sardinia's wine production, with a vineyard of 26,700 ha, is around 684,000 hl. The region produces twice as much red wine as white, mostly at PDO level. Sardinia's main grape varieties are Cannonau (35%) and Vermentino (28%).
Sardinia is made up of 85% mountains and plateaus and viticulture is mainly practised on the gently rolling Campidano plains between Cagliari and Oristano and on the Alghero plain. The vineyards cover some 26,700 ha of vineyards. A very mild Mediterranean climate prevails, its southern position in the Mediterranean guarantees abundant sunshine and in the southern area, due to the drought, irrigation is necessary. However, the temperatures are very different. The cooler north produces fresh and fruity white wines, the warmer south and west produce red white and dessert wines.
