Malta

Malta

The island of Malta is located in southeastern Europe about 90 km south of Sicily, and about 300 km from the coast of Africa. It is an archipelago of several islands, 3 inhabited, Malta 246 km2, Gozo 67 km2 and Comino 3 km2 and 3 uninhabited, Cominotto, Filfla and San Paolo.

The Phoenicians settled on the island around 800 BC and introduced viticulture. The Romans continued this practice after the Third Punic War and the conquest of Carthage from 200 BC, when they occupied the island. The Knights of the Order of St. John (later Knights of Malta) produced mainly fair wine during their rule from the 16th to the 18th century.
