DOCs Sardinia
In the world of wine, Sardinia is known for the red wines made with Cannonau and the white wines made with Vermentino. It has 1 DOCG Vermentino di Gallura, 17 DOC and 15 IGP.
DOCG Vermentino di Gallura
Located in the Olbia-Tempio region, the DOC was established in 1975 and upgraded to DOCG in 1996. The vineyard area is 1.174 ha and the production is 44.000 hl. This wine is made from the Vermentino grape and can be vinified as dry white, sweet, frizzante and sparkling or with the quality of Superior White.
Some DOC can be produced all over the island, such as:
Vermentino di Sardegna DOC
The DOC was established in 1972. The vineyard area is 1.706 ha and the production is 110.200 hl. This wine is made from the Vermentino grape and can be vinified as dry white, sweet, frizzante and sparkling.
Cannonau di Sardegna DOC
The DOC was established in 1998. The vineyard area is 1.646 ha and the production is 77.850 hl. This wine is made from the Cannonau grape (Garnacha in Spain) and can be vinified as rosé, red, classico, licoroso, passito and riserva.
Other general DOC are Sardegna Semidano DOC with 14 ha, Moscato di Sardegna DOC with 35 ha and Monica di Sardegna 124 ha.
In the region of Sassari we find the DOC:
Moscato di Sorso-Senori DOC with 8 ha and Alghero DOC with 376 ha with a diversity of grapes for vinification such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Torbato, Vermentino in white and Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cagnulari, Merlot, Sangiovese in red.
In the region of Nuoro and especially in Oristano we find the DOC:
Mandrolisai DOC with 19 ha of the Bovale variety, Vernaccia di Oristano DOC with 11 ha, Malvasia di Bosa DOC with 12 ha, Carignano del Sulcis DOC with 248 ha, Campidano di Terralba DOC with 20 ha of the Bovale grape and Arborea DOC with the Trebbiano and Sangiovese varieties.
In the region of Cagliari further south we find the DOC:
Nuragus di Cagliari DOC with 86 ha, Nasco di Cagliari DOC with 30 ha, Girò di Cagliari DOC and Cagliari DOC with 48 ha of the varieties Malvasia, Moscato, Vermentino and Monica as red.
