TYPES OF GRAPES
The Mediterranean climate is characterised by hot, dry summers and cool, rainy winters. There are no rivers, Malta is one of the driest countries in the world. Rainwater irrigation and groundwater wells are necessary. The vineyards cover some 1,000 ha on clay, sandy and calcareous soils. The first two wineries Emmanuel Delicata and Marsovin started to treat wine more seriously, from the 1970s onwards international varieties were planted. These are red grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Carignan, Grenache Noir and Syrah. Of white grapes there are planted Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Pinot Gris, Trebbiano and Muscat Blanc. Before phylloxera there were 120 autochthonous varieties and today the most important are Girgentina, Gennarua and Gellewza.
